However cataract is the opacity in lens preventing clear image formation on retina. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WHO\/NPCB (National Programme for Control of Blindness) survey has shown that there is a backlog of over 22 million blind eyes (12 million blind people) in\u00c2\u00a0India, and 80.1% of these are blind due to\u00c2\u00a0cataract. The annual\u00c2\u00a0incidence\u00c2\u00a0of\u00c2\u00a0cataract blindness is about 3.8 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ETIOLOGY OF CATARACT<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Senile<\/li><li>Congenital<\/li><li>Systemic diseases: Diabetes Mellitus, Galactosaemia, Hypoparathyroidism etc.<\/li><li>Trauma<\/li><li>Drug: Steroid<\/li><li>Toxic agents: Copper, Cigarette smoking etc.<\/li><li>Complicated cataract: (Cataract due other ocular disease) Iridocyclitis, Retinitis pigmentosa etc.<\/li><li>Radiation<\/li><li>Electric shock<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SYMPTOMS<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Blurring of vision\/ diminution of vision<\/li><li>White or greyish opacity<\/li><li>Frequent changes of glass<\/li><li>Difficulty in bright light<\/li><li>Difficulty in night vision<\/li><li>Coloured haloes<\/li><li>Glare<\/li><li>Loss of contrast sensitivity<\/li><li>Myopic shift( increase of minus power in aged person)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>TREATMENT<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no medical treatment for cataract. Though, surgery (Cataract extraction &amp; Intraocular lens implantation) is the only treatment, but in initial stages, refraction and adjustment of illumination helps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>TYPES OF SURGERY<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Phacoemulsification with foldable IOL (Intra Ocular Lens) implantation is the choice of surgery.
